Vertical lip lines come with time and can arrive sooner on sun-damaged skin, which makes daily habits the first topic and treatments the second. Some options are quick and temporary, some take repeat visits, and none is described as permanent.
Cleveland Clinic and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery explain what lip lines are, why they form, what daily protection is recommended and where filler, neuromodulators, microneedling and peels fit. Picking one of those treatments is a decision for a licensed clinician who has examined you.
What lip lines are
Cleveland Clinic says lip lines are vertical wrinkles that can appear on your lips and extend from your upper lip to the tip of your nose. It says lip wrinkles may range from fine, subtle lines to deep creases.
That range matters, because a fine line and a deep crease may call for different conversations. When you see a provider, point out which of the two you mean and which lines bother you most.
Why they form, and when
Cleveland Clinic says you may develop lip lines for a range of reasons, including the natural aging process and certain lifestyle habits. It says the underlying cause is activity of the muscle around the mouth, which becomes more active with time.
Cleveland Clinic also says lip lines usually develop around your 40s, but you might see lip wrinkles earlier if you smoke or have sun-damaged skin.
Sun is the part of that list people can plan around from the start. Cleveland Clinic's page on lip lines covers causes, filler and other treatments in one place.
Daily protection
Cleveland Clinic advises you to apply sunscreen with SPF 30 every day and use lip balm.
The advice does not depend on the season, which is the useful point about it. A daily habit covers the weeks when you are not thinking about the sun. Ask a dermatologist how to include the lips and the skin above them in your routine.
What treatment can and cannot do
Cleveland Clinic says you can't permanently get rid of lip lines, but that some treatments can reduce or temporarily improve lip wrinkles.
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says fillers can be used to temporarily plump lips, raise depressed scars and level wrinkled skin.
Both sources use the word temporary. That sets the expectation for every option below: each reduces or softens lines for a time. A dermatology society's page on injectable hyaluronic acid describes one common type of filler in more detail.
Relaxing the muscle
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says a minute amount of neuromodulators, which are wrinkle-relaxing injections of botulinum toxin, is injected directly into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the appearance of the overlying skin. It says the improvement generally lasts about three to four months before the effect gradually fades and muscle action returns.
Cleveland Clinic gives longer figures for how long treatments last, saying Botox may last up to six months, while lip fillers can last up to 12 months.
The two sources give different durations for the same kind of injection, three to four months in one and up to six months in the other. Treat both as ranges, and ask your provider what to expect for you and how often you would need to return.
Other options
Cleveland Clinic lists microneedling, with or without radiofrequency (collagen induction therapy), which creates small punctures in your skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production.
The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says chemical peels improve the appearance of wrinkled skin by using a chemical solution to remove the outer layer of old skin, and that the new skin that replaces it is usually smoother and less wrinkled in appearance.
These work on the skin's surface and its collagen and not on the muscle, so they are a different kind of option from the injections above. Ask your provider whether either would suit your lines.
Questions for your provider
Lip lines are a good example of a topic where place and timing quietly set the plan: how much sun the skin has already had, how much it will get, and how often you are willing to return for treatment that does not last. The questions to carry are short. What causes my lines? What daily protection should I use? Which options are temporary, and for how long? How often would I return?
Take them to a licensed clinician who can look at your lips and skin in person.
